Washunga Days is a community festival that takes place in historic Council Grove, Kansas. It is a celebration honoring the Kaw Indians, the Community, Families, and Friends. The festival takes place each year on the third weekend in June. The three day celebration (powwow is Friday & Saturday) is packed with music, entertainment, a parade, car show, arts & crafts, food vendors, kid’s games and fun, a 5K run/walk, Kaw Nation Intertribal powwow, fireworks, and so much more! The area beneath the arbor is used for dancing and ceremonies. For the Kaw people, the arena is a sacred place. This beautiful, lighted Native American dance venue features state-of-the-art sound technology, and is nestled in the scenic heart of the tribe’s Allegawaho Heritage Memorial Park. In 2002 the Kaw Nation dedicated the park, comprised of 168 acres of their native homeland that includes one of the three Kaw villages that were occupied from the 1840s to 1872.

Photographs may be taken during the Kaw Nation Washunga Days Powwow, but ask permission before taking photos of individuals. Photos should never be taken during veterans’ songs, flag songs, prayers or any other time specified by the master of ceremonies.
In addition to the Washunga Days Powwow on Friday and Saturday which recognizes the community’s Kaw Nation heritage, Council Grove celebrates its historic past and ties to the old Santa Fe Trail and 24 related national historic landmarks with additional festivities that run from Friday to Sunday.
Council Grove’s weekend Washunga Days events begin with a flea market all day Friday, continuing through Sunday at the baseball fields. Kickoff and welcome for Council Grove’s Washuga Days will be at the Riverwalk at 4:30, Friday, with food vendors, beer garden, carnival, inflatables and petting zoo during the evening. Friday and Saturday evening musical entertainment is scheduled on the Main Stage, starrting around 5:00 pm each night. During Washunga Days in Council Grove, Kaw Tribal members will present Kaw Culture Demonstrations at the Kaw Mission State Historic Site, which served as a school for Kaw youth in the 1800s, and now is a state-supported museum.
