Showcasing a weekend filled with drummers and dancers in full regalia, the Skagit Valley College Fall Powwow is a multicultural event sure to draw performers from all across the U.S. and Canada. ? The powwow will be hosted by the one and only Anthony Bluehorse as Master of Ceremonies. ? Host Drum will be the incredible Black Lodge Singers, a family drum from White Swan, WA started by Kenny Scabby Robe (Blackfeet), his wife Louise (Yakama), and their twelve sons. ? Head Man Dancer Sheldon (Navajo) Shebala and Head Woman Dancer Paula Shebala (Blackfeet) are well-respected championship dancers from Coeur d? Alene, Idaho. ? Arena Director Raymond Rehaume is a Chicken?dancer from Everett, Washington. ? Whip Man Lou LaBombard is a Seneca-Mohawk (Haudenosaunne) of the Iroquois confederacy, Wolf and Heron clans, and lives with his wife on Whidbey Island. Professor Labombard holds several degrees in Anthropology and Sociology at Skagit Valley College, and is an international teller of Native American oral traditions, head singer, traditional dancer, MC, and judge at Pow Wows around the country. There will be cash prizes for the dance contests, and wonderful door prizes given away throughout the celebration.? Activities feature dance performances, a Kid’s Corner for arts and crafts, and vendors selling traditional crafts and original Native American artwork. The event will be held indoors, with nearby?access to area hotels, campgrounds, and restaurants.?Food vendors will be on campus, and a complimentary dinner is being planned for honored guests of the pow wow.? Skagit Valley College has a long history of collaboration with it’s local Native American neighbors, including hosting pow wows on campus in previous years.?In 2012, famed Swinomish Master Carver Kevin Paul created the beautiful story pole for the campus, as a celebration of the?culture of the?area tribes and their relationship with Skagit Valley College.
