The 12th Annual Susanville Indian Rancheria (SIR) Powwow has moved location to Lassen Community College in the gymnasium in Susanville, California. The powwow runs from Friday October 22nd to Sunday the 24th. SIR is composed of members of the Pit River, Maidu, Paiute and Washoe tribes who are sponsoring and organizing the powwow to celebrate and honor elders, veterans and the ancestors of indigenous peoples and to bring cultural awareness to the community. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. This is a drug and alcohol free event.
This Native American event will feature dance competitions for Native men, women and youth. Male categories include Traditional, Fancy, and Grass and female categories include Traditional, Shawl and Jingle. Watching them dance in their beautiful regalia is truly a stunning experience.
Dancers and vendors will be from near and far away. Vendors will be selling a wide variety of Native crafts, jewelry and art. Food vendors will be selling the ever popular Fry Bread. The Native American host drum will be Buffalo Hill, whose singers are a group located in the Northwest, mostly from the Yakama Nation and surrounding areas. Host staff includes: Fred Hill as MC, Jerry Bear as Arenda Director, Tasha Goodwill as Head Woman, Sam Slickpoo as Head Man
The powwow will be presenting a Red Dress Special Dance to honor and bring awareness to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and girls (MMIWG). The Red Dress is worn to educate and to empower the sacredness of women. For indigenous women from the ages of 10 to 24, homicide is the third leading cause of death.
